Security Guard Training in Utah

In Utah, a license is required for unarmed security guards. The Utah Division of Occupational and Prof Licensing (DOPL) administers licensing. License is renewed every two years. There are certain criteria that must be met before a license will be approved.

Basic requirements for unarmed security guards in Utah:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Valid Social Security number
  • Driver’s License
  • Finger print cards (2) or electronic fingerprinting is accepted
  • Certificate of completion of 24-hours of classroom training with a score of at least 80%
  • Mentally competent
  • Have good moral character
  • No drug or alcohol use or dependence
  • Must successfully pass a drug test
  • No felony convictions
  • No disabilities that would prevent performance of duty
  • Submit to criminal background check

Training Curriculum:

A basic training conducted may include but is not limited to the following:

  1. Role of Private Security
  2. Legal Aspects
  3. Patrol and Observation
  4. Incident Response
  5. Security Resources: Surveillance operation and documentation
  6. Customer Service Issues: Working with and addressing the public
  7. First Aid Overview

Fees are nonrefundable:

  • Application processing fee: $100

  9. When you get accepted to get an interview and if the jobs wants you they will provide the training for you in most cases. Unless you want to pay extra money out of pocket to do it yourself

  10. I need Continuing Education credits to keep my Guard Card active-I’m only short about 5 credits before it expires at the end of November. It needs to be online and free or as cheap as possible because of time and financial limitations (have to save what little I have to pay for the renewal fee) Please advise.

  13. I have the same question mention above. I currently live in Ca and have a standard Ca guard card. I want to transfer to Utah. Since I am not a resident of Utah at the moment what would be the best solution since I would need to begin working right away in order to secure a place to live.

  14. j have a guard card and I am a resident of Utah…I took the armed class so many times and I was still unarmed security…Then after that, I took a twice an unarmed class and got certified and then joined security and train for armed..I didn’t get armed security took the class 6 times. I was not very happy to become one, and I wished to become armed security and now become unarmed security…I know security is about “Protect and server”.
