Security Guard Training in Michigan

In Michigan, the unarmed security guard does not need to be licensed. The company that hires you needs to hold the license and can hire unarmed security guards that are not licensed. However, there are basic criteria that the state requires.

Basic requirements for unarmed security guard in Michigan:

  • Must be at least 18 year old
  • Must be a United States citizen or registered resident alien
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • May be required to submit to drug testing (This is not required by the state but may be required by hiring agency)
  • Successfully pass a background check

Other Requirements that May Be Helpful:

  • Driver’s License
  • Good physical conditioning
  • Be able to stand long periods of time
  • Good Communication skills

  5. Unfortunately it is not required by the state for Security Officers to have any training to carry a firearm or the other weapons Security Officers may carry. However it is being seen by more and more, companies are taking it among their selves to require training among its employees. Without training, in my opinion, any person can really be a Security Officer, and in some ways, its impossible to weed out the irresponsible persons. I work for a more “aggressive” company and pride ourselves in being extremely proactive in finding drugs, weapons and other things, were recognized by local law enforcement and receive a lot of support from them. However, we tend to hire less than responsible persons whos only goal in life is to draw a weapon on someone and slap the cuffs on…I believe we should all have some Basic level of training and understanding how things work.
