Armed Security Guard Training in Virginia

Registration is required for armed security guards in Virginia. The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice makes the regulations regarding licensing. There are certain criteria that must be met before a license will be approved. All paperwork and application is submitted by the hiring company.

Basic requirements for armed security guards in Virginia:

  • Be at least 18 years old (usually 21 in other states)
  • Finger print cards
  • Mentally competent
  • No drug or alcohol use or dependence
  • Must successfully pass a drug test
  • No felony convictions
  • No disabilities that would prevent performance of duty
  • Submit to criminal background check
  • Successfully complete 18 hours of required training
  • Firearms Endorsement

Training Curriculum:

A basic training must be conducted by a board-approved instructor. Topics may include but is not limited to the following:

  1. Orientation – 2 hours
    • Laws and Regulations
    • Code of Ethics
    • Role and Responsibilities
  2. Law – 4 hours
  3. Security Patrol, Access Control, and Communications – 2 hours
  4. Writing reports – 4 hours
  5. Emergency Procedures – 4 hours
  6. Confrontation Management – 2 hours

Firearms Training

Armed security guard applicants must successfully complete ALL training requirements to receive a firearms endorsement. Please click here to view Training course outline and Firearms Endorsement form.

Fees

  • Registration: $25
  • Fingerprinting: $50
  • Firearm Endorsement $10

Hello I want to become a armed security guard and I wanted to know can I become one if I had a conviction of habitual offender for driving and now that all that is straight with receiving my license back and paying all fines and have gotten my rights restored am I able to become a armed security guard.   4. I am currently retired and am looking for part time security work. I currently hold a valid concealed carry permit in the state of Virginia. I am a life time member of the NRA and have received training in both the the mandatory concealed carry courses and the mandatory safety and firing qualifications for the Lafayette Gun club of which I am also currently a member in good standings. What else would I have to do to become an armed security guard? I also have armed security guard experience for Miller and Associates back in the 1970s in Alexandria Virginia.   12. I have a question in regards to obtaining a Virginia Armed Guard License. I am currently employed with the Virginia Department of Corrections as a corrections officer. I have gone through the firearms training as it’s a yearly requirement. Would I still need to obtain an armed guard license even though I’m still a corrections officer? Or would I just need a copy of my weapons card? I’m asking this because I’m trying to be an armed security guard and I want to make sure I meet any requirements. Thank you.
